The Medical University- Sofia presented a documentary exhibition for the life of dr. Andrei Georgiev in the lobby of hall 2 in the National Palace of Culture. The exhibition was accomplished thanks to the efforts of the journalist from the newspaper Trud, Lubomir Yordanov and with the help from the Municipality of Lom the Mayor Mrs. Penka Penkova. She came especially for the occasion.
Dr. Georgiev worked as a doctor all his life – from the graduation in Bulgaria, through his specialization in Czech Republic and France, from where he emigrated in America. There he worked as a family physician and an urologist. First he worked in California, and then over 50 years in Wilmington.
“Dr. Andrei Georgiev bequeathed $ 5 million, from which more than $ 2.5 million to the “Naiden Gerov” school in Lom, where he studied. More than $500 000 to the city Lom and around $1 million to the university in the American State Delaware, where he worked.
The amazing is that he donated more than $1 million to the Medical University- Sofia. The generous donation of the Bulgarian emigrant is a recognition to the university in which he grew up as a doctor and person. The Academic Management decided that every year there will be 20 000 BGN prize for the medical students that graduate with full honors. The money will be distributed among all faculties, Branch- Vratsa and the Medical College.
The students that graduated whit full honors this year received the first prizes. They are four ladies, graduated with full honors and for the first time in the history of the Medical University- Sofia there is one foreign student – dr. Eman Anies from Egypt. All of them received the Golden Hippocrates Award and 2500 BGN as financial prize from the donated money of dr. Andrei Georgiev. The rector prof. dr. Viktor Zlatkov mentioned in his speech that part of the inheritance, in the amount of BGN 180 000, will be distributed as a prize fund for the first 3 places in the Design Contest for the new Rector's Administrative Building. One of the auditoriums will be named after the late dr. Andrei Georgiev.
During the presentation of the exhibition, Mr. Lyubomir Yordanov told about the documents he showed from the State Security Archive. He explained what he discovered about the life of the emigrant and patriot dr. Andrei Georgiev.
The mayor of Lom Municipality Mrs. Penkova shared with the audience, how proud the town is that dr. Georgiev never forgot Bulgaria, in spite of the difficult years he had before the emigration.
Everybody shared the opinion that the work of this great Bulgarian should not be forgotten, as his moral significant puts him alongside the brothers Hristo and Evlogi Georgievi and all other donors who loved Bulgaria.
