Medics` scholarships from donor-millionaire

He was a respected family doctor with more than 50 years of experience.

Four medical students with outstanding grades will be awarded the prize of the Medical Faculty - The Golden Hippocrates. Scholarships will be given to 4 students graduated with full honors for the first time at the 2018 graduation ceremony of the Sofia Medical faculty at Sofia Medical University. This will take place on the 24th of January in the National Palace of Culture. The funds are provided by the inheritance of the Bulgarian doctor from USA - doctor Andrei Georgiev. He bequeathed $ 1 037 413 to the Sofia Medical University. Dr. Georgiev was born in Sofia in 1921. He emigrated to America in the early 1950s. With his labor, he gradually accumulates capital, much of which, he bequeaths to Lom city and the “Naiden Gerov” High School he graduated; the municipality and the Sofia Medical University. He was a famous respected family doctor with more than 50 years of experience. He was extremely modest and through his whole life he helped young people to learn and develop professionally. He died at the age of 93 years old, on the 22nd of April 2014 in his home in Ulmington, Delaware.

With a decision of the Academic Management of the Medical University, a prize fund was established of BGN 20 000 per year, for the students graduated with honors. The amounts are distributed to all faculties, Branch- Vratsa and the Medical College. This year the absolvents of the Medical faculty at the Medical University are 435. Of these, 243 are Bulgarians and 192 are foreigners. The students graduated with full honors, who will receive the award “The Golden Hippocrates” are 4 ladies, including an Egyptian absolvent. This is the first time a foreign student has graduated with outstanding grades.

The Academic Management has decided to grant another BGN 1000 to students, who received prizes for scientific achievements in high forums held abroad or were awarded by international organizations. Part of the inheritance, in the amount of BGN 180 000, will be distributed as a prize fund for the first 3 places in the Design Contest for the new Rector's Administrative Building. One of the auditoriums will be named after the late dr. Andrei Georgiev.
